Zhang Qi: Don't Forget the Way You Came
Editor's Note
Zhang Qi, former assistant teacher and journalist of English Press Corps (EPC), now serves as a Chinese teacher in the Confucius Institute of Newcastle.
Always enjoying the heavy workload, Zhang Qi was exceedingly passionate for being an English journalist. “When I learned that English Press Corps was recruiting new staff, I applied for this job. And I found that I really got along with the faculty and liked EPC very much, so I just seized this opportunity.”
In EPC, Zhang Qi’s former working experiences in translating and interpreting helped him so much in reviewing news that he could handle the proofreading work with facility. But what impressed him most is the help from his workmates. “I could say that my workmates are really fantastic and awesome. On the surface, it seems that I am the one who polishes their writings. However, by doing this, I was also greatly inspired by them. And that’s what I appreciate most in EPC.”
When talking about the most unforgettable experience in EPC, what comes to Zhang Qi first is the Sports Sessions of CCNU in 2019. “Due to the timeliness of the Sports Sessions, the reports should be finished within three days. So I was really busy at that time, considering I not only had to finish my assignments like interviewing and writing news on time, but also had to review other news in our team. Despite how difficult and intense the task was, we somehow carried it through and it was well received. It was a wonderful feeling when our hard work paid off at the end.”
You are here for reasons best known to yourself.
As an experienced English journalist, Zhang Qi has a lot to share with us. “I suggest each and every one of you should have a sense of ownership. When you write a piece of news or conduct an interview, please be responsible for it. You are supposed to polish your paper on your own again and again, consulting relevant materials online as much as possible, choosing carefully the best possible diction and so on. Only in this way can you learn something and make substantial progress in the long term. You are here for reasons best known to yourself, but I guess being sloppy at work isn’t one of them.”
Today is the Journalists’ Day. Zhang Qi sends sincere wishes to all the journalists. “This incredible journey in EPC is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. I hope you can all enjoy as much as I did here and shine in your own position as a journalist. Wish you all a happy and delightful career!”
